Ola Electric Scooter Fire Incidents Under Investigation in India: A Closer Look at the Emerging Challenges in the Electric Vehicle Market

Based on the information from the Economic Times, an incident involving an Ola Electric scooter catching fire is currently under investigation in southern Kerala, India. This marks the second known instance of an Ola S1 range scooter catching fire.

The incident occurred in a village in Thiruvananthapuram district late last week. The scooter, valued at 1800 USD, was parked in a garage when it spontaneously ignited late at night. Local police authorities have confirmed that this was not a case of arson and investigations are ongoing.

The owner of the scooter has reported that Ola has been cooperating proactively with his family and has offered to replace the vehicle. This is not the first time Ola’s S1 range of scooters has been involved in a fire incident. Last year, an Ola S1 Pro scooter went up in flames during the day in Lohegaon in Pune, triggering an investigation by the Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety, an entity under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Ola's electric scooter has also seen multiple instances of the front fork breaking. Widespread customer complaints on various issues had initially affected the scooter’s sales, which have since recovered. Despite these challenges, the company has aggressive plans to dominate the electric-scooter market and is building a gigafactory comprising an automobile manufacturing plant as well as a battery manufacturing facility in the Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu.
